Prof. Bashiru Ademola Raji

President

Prof Raji is a Pedologist of international repute. Before his election as the President in March 2018, he was at various times between 2003 and 2012 the Vice President, Treasurer and Assistant Secretary. KEY QUALIFICATIONS Professor Bashir Ademola RAJI holds a doctoral degree in Soil Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a postgraduate diploma in Soil Survey using remote sensing from the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Science, Enschede, The Netherlands. He has his background in Geology having obtained B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in the field. Professor Raji’s areas of specialization include soil genesis, classification, soil survey and land use planning with an affinity for environmental impact assessment of natural resources utilization. He has over 35 years of enviable teaching, research and consulting experience in his field. TEACHING AND SUPERVISION Professor Raji is a devoted and committed teacher who has taught a number of courses in Soil Science and Geology at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and University of Calabar, Calabar, Uthmano Danfodio University, Sokoto, Bayero University, Kano, University of Ilorin, Ilorin and Federal University of Technology, Minna on Visiting Appointments. Besides his research work, he has also supervised and co-supervised 10 PhD, 11 M.Sc and 20 B.Sc student theses. RESEARCH/PUBLICATION RECORD Professor Raji is a senior soil scientist of repute. He has published numerous papers in many scientific journals of international standing spread across the United State of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), Belgium, India, Pakistan, The Netherlands, and Nigeria. He has to his credit over 100 publications, over 70 of which are in Journal publications in the areas of characterization and management of marginal land resources for sustainable agricultural production, and groundwater quality evaluation for irrigation. Professor Raji has also been a key speaker at National and International seminars and conferences, among which is the International Conference on Desertification, 2002 at Cape Town, the 18th World Congress of Soil Science, 2006 at Philadelphia, USA, 4th Sino-African Agricultural Education Workshop in Beijing, China August 2007, All African Soil Science Society Conference and the Soil Science Society of Nigeria Conferences. ADMINISTRATIVE RECORD Professor Raji was the Coordinator of the Department of Forest Resources Management of the University of Ilorin having being appointed while on visiting appointment. He completed his tenure as the Dean of Students the Dean of Students Affairs Division of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 2010. He was the Head, Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, and the Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring of the University between 2006 and 2008. He also served as the Assistant Dean (Postgraduate) for the Faculty of Agriculture between 2003 and 2005. Prior to these, he has severally acted for the Fibre Research Programme Leader, IAR- ABU from 1996 –2002. He has and is participating, actively in many University-based committees among which are the University Senate representative on the Governing Board of National Agricultural Extension Research Liaison Services, ABU, Zaria between 2003 and 2005. He was the Vice Chancellor, Fountain University, Osogbo between 2012 and 2016. COMMUNITY SERVICE Aside from Professor Raji’s academic and research activities, he has also served as consultant to government (Federal and State-NALDA, FME, FMARD), private sector and International organization (World Bank, African Development Bank, International Finance Development Corporation (IFDC), FAO) in a number of soil survey, Land degradation evaluation, soil and water quality assessment and soil testing projects. He was the State coordinator for the Monthly/Quarterly Technology Review Meeting (MTRM/QTRM) for Zamfara State (2000-2004) having been an active member of the Core Team for Katsina State (1996-2000) through the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR-ABU). Professor Raji has served diligently as the chairman, Offa Royal Club (2006-2010), Zaria; National Treasurer, Offa Descendant Union (1995-2006); Managing Editor, Nigerian Journal of Soil research (1999-2006); Associate Editor, Nigerian Journal of Soil and Environmental Research (2007-Date), Assistant Secretary, Soil Science Society of Nigeria (1999-2003); Treasurer, Soil Science Society of Nigeria (2003-2016); Vice President of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria and currently the President of SSSN. PROFESSIONAL BODIES Professor Raji was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria and African Scientists Institute (ASI). Professor Raji is a life Member of the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN), and also a Life member and Fellow of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN), and an active corporate member of the following learned societies: Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Indian Soil Science Society (ISSS) (Financially inactive now), Nigerian Society of Remote Sensing (NSRS), All African Soil Science Society (AASSS) and is currently the National Vice President of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN). He has as well served as reviewer to several scientific Journals; Nigerian Journal of Soil Research, Journal of Arid Agriculture, SPECTRUM, Journal of Agriculture and Environment, Current Science, Samaru Journal of Agricultural Research, and Science Forum.

Prof. D.O. Asawalam

Vice- President

Damian Okwudiri Asawalam is a Professor of Soil Science at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, (MOUAU) in Abia State, Nigeria. He was trained at University of Nigeria Nsukka from where he obtained Bachelor’s degree in Soil Science, Master’s degree in Soil survey and Land Evaluation and doctorate degree in Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition. Prior to joining the services of MOUAU, Professor Damian Okwudiri Asawalam was a Research Officer at the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria, (RRIN), Benin City where he served as the Head of the Soil and Plant Nutrition Division, and in 1991, joined the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, as the Research Supervisor for the GTZ Special Project. Professor Asawalam joined the services of MOUAU in 1998, rose through the ranks and by focused diligence and due appraisal process was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2009. Professor Asawalam is a dedicated mentor who has successfully graduated over 38 Masters and Ph.D students, and numerous undergraduate students. Many of his past students are working in Universities and Research Institutes across the country. His academic output has led to over 70 published articles in reputable peer reviewed journals, edited conference proceedings and book chapters. Professor Asawalam has served the university in different capacities as chair and member of many committees and three time Head of Department of Soil Science and Meteorology. He discharged these responsibilities creditably to the admiration of his peers who had no problems electing him the Dean of the College of Crop and Soil Sciences in 2012. Professor Asawalam served as the Editor – in – Chief of the University Journal (Journal of Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment) from 2012 – 2015. He also served as the Deputy Editor - in - Chief of Nigerian Journal of Soil Science as well as the Editor of Soil Science Society of Nigeria Newsletter (2010 – 2018). Professor Asawalam has undertaken many Professional development training courses including Crop–weather modeling in Israel, Research Methodology in South Africa, Decision support tools for agricultural production, fertilizer recommendations and climate variability in Tanzania, Strategic management for University Administrators, among others. His training in strategic planning, research management and effective leadership has been successfully applied in administrative functions, Research Leadership and resource mobilization and has seen him serve as team leader in different National and International projects. Professor Asawalam has rendered valuable services to other Universities and professional bodies. He has been external examiner or professorial assessor to many Universities including Imo State University (IMSU), Delta State University (DELSU), Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT), Ebonyi State University (EBSU), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAB) and University of Calabar (UNICAL). He has also served as Visiting Scientist to Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) and as Senior Research Adviser at the Shell Petroleum Development Company, Port Harcourt. Furthermore, Professor Asawalam has rendered quality community service as a member of the University extension team that collaborated with Bountiful Harvest, Afikpo and Agricultural Rejuvenation project, Isuochi. He also led Climate change adaptation investigations in rural communities in Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo states and collaborated with Tubali Development Initiative to execute a Henrich Boel Foundation project on Climate and Agriculture. Furthermore, he is an active and very visible member of some professional bodies like, Soil Science Society of Nigeria, International Union of Soil Science, Soil Science Society of America, Agricultural Society of Nigeria, International Biometric Society, and Nigeria Environmental Study Action Team. He is widely travelled and has participated in international conferences and workshops in Ghana, Republic of Benin, Tanzania, Mozambique, Italy, Israel and United States of America. Professor Asawalam has won several awards/fellowships including the following: Best graduating student of Soil Science by the Department of Soil Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1985; GTZ-IITA Fellowship for doctoral degree; Member, College of Research Associate, United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa, 2015; Soil Ambassador Award by the Soil Science Society of Nigeria, 2016. He is a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria and has received several awards from his community and the Church. Professor Asawalam is a devout Catholic and a music lover. He is married to Professor Elechi Franca Asawalam, and their marriage is blessed with four lovely children.

Education and Qualifications Attended Saint Patrick Primary School, Abanwan-Erei where he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate examination on Merit in 1965. He attended the Community Secondary Grammar School (COSGRAMs), Ugep, where he obtained the West African School Certificate (WAEC) with Grade 1in 1975. He was employed by the South-eastern State Teaching Service Commission and posted to Secondary Commercial School (EDANAFA), Ediba, in 1975, where he distinguished himself as a geography teacher. He was successful at JAMB and admitted into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1978 and obtained the Bachelor of Agriculture (B Agric.) degree with Second Class Honours, Upper Division,in Soil Science in 1983. He participated in the National Youths Service Corps, Eleventh Batch, at the School of Agriculture, Zuru, Sokoto State, now Kebbi State, from 1983 to 1984. He was employed by the Cross River State Government and posted to Community Secondary School, Adim, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding Agricultural Science teacher, from 1984 to 1985. In January 1986, he joined the Department of Agriculture, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Cross River State, Uyo, as a Teaching Assistant. He obtained the MSc (Agronomy; Soil Science) degree from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, in 1988 andthe PhD (Agronomy, with specialization in Soil Physics & Conservation) from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, in 1999. He was upgraded to Lecturer II, October 1, 1998 and promoted to Lecturer I, October 1, 2000; Senior Lecturer, October 1, 2002; Associate Professor, October 1, 2008; and Professor of Soil Physics & Conservation, October 1, 2011. He is the First Professor of Soil Physics and Conservation, in the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and also the first in the South-South zone of Nigeria. Committees/Community Service with the University of Uyo Head, Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management, University of Uyo, Uyo (2010-2012). Faculty of Agriculture Representative, Postgraduate School Board, University of Uyo, Uyo (2004/2005, 2012-2018). He is the current the Secretary General (2018-2020) and a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria. Services outside the University of Uyo He was the South-South Regional Coordinator for soil research in Nigeria, by the Institute of Agricultural Research & Training (IAR&T), Moor Plantation, Ibadan, under the Federal Government mandate for soil research in Nigeria: 2016-2017. He was the Coordinator, South-South zone of Nigeria Soil Health Consortium (NgSHC), and Member, Coordinating Committee of the Nigerian Soil Health Consortium (NgSHC)-South: 2016-2017. External Examiner, Department of Soil Science & Land Management, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State: 2019 Membership of Organizations He is a member of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN); International Union of Soil Science (IUSS); Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS); International Soil Tillage Research Organization (ISTRO); and Nigerian Society for Biological Conservation (NSBC). Publications He has published 70 articles in national and international journals (56), books (6), and Conference proceedings (8). Most of the articles are co-authored with his students and professional colleagues. It is remarkable that 10 of the journal publications are post-professorial articles, which is evidence that he is still publishing even after becoming a professor. He has supervised 7 Postgraduate Diploma, 10 M.Sc. Dissertations and 1 PhD, and is currently supervising 1 PhD student. Family Life He is married to Mrs. Dorathy Ibanga-Ogban, and the marriage has produced four children.

The immediate past President of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN), Professor Victor Okechukwu Victor, fsssn has been re-appointed to chair the African Soil Partnership of the United Nation’s Food Agricultural Organization (FAO). In a letter convening the re-appointment, Ronald Vargas, the Secretary, Global Soil Partnership predicated his re-appointment on his outstanding leadership performance during the recently successfully concluded AfSP workshop in Rome. The appointment is for a period of two years starting June 2018. Prof Chude is arguably the longest serving President of the Society (2004-2018) and has contributed immensely towards the global visibility enjoyed by the Society. Without doubt his era could be termed the “golden era”. His meritorious service to the Society include Assistant Secretary, Secretary and Vice President (2000-2003). Prof Chude started his working career as Research Fellow at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (1978-1988), Professor at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria ( 1988-2002) and has been a Consultant to the National Programme for Food Security, Abuja since 2003. Prof Chude is widely travelled and has also been a key speaker at numerous National and International seminars and conferences on the nature and status of Soil Science in Nigeria across continents visiting countries like Germany, Brazil, USA, Niger, Togo, Netherlands, Burkina-Faso, Australia, Italy, Kenya, China, Korea, Colombia, Israel just to mention a few. He has also supervised and co-supervised 13 PhD, 13 M.Sc and several B.Sc student theses. Prof Chude is a true Nigeria who speaks ALL the three major Nigerian languages fluently. He is married with Children.
