Professor George Abayomi Ojanuga, FSSSN slept in the Lord in the wee hours of Saturday morning -30th June 2018. The late Prof Ojanuga was the Head of Dept. of Soil Science & Land Management Dept at Uthmano Dan Fodio University, Sokoto. He started his working career with the Soil Survey Staff, Soil Research Division of Western Region Ministry of Agriculture, Ibadan in 1965-1966 having obtained his B.Sc in 1965 from the University of Illinois. He obtained his Ph.D in 1971 from the University of Wisconsin. He was a one time President of the Society (1988-1992), Vice President (1984-1988) and could be considered “a de-localized” Pedologist having worked actively at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile -Ife (1966-1976), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1976-1982), River State University of Science and Technology, Port-Harcourt (1982-1986), Federal Universities of Agriculture, Markudi (1988-1994) and Abeokuta (1995-2005) before joining UDUS in 2006 on Contract. He was at various times the Head of Department, Dean of Faculty and University Council Member. He supervised several postgraduate theses and was always an active paper presenter either as an invited or voluntary participant. He will be remembered for his pioneering role on Agro-ecological zonations in Nigeria, Landuse planning for optimizing agricultural production in Sierra Leone and Indigenous Soil Classification in Nigeria. Among the legacy he left behind is the NICANSOIL Soil References Library situated at University of Agriculture, Makurdi; a project funded by the Canadian Agency for International Development (CIDA). He is survived by many biological and “pedological” children and grand children.
